Little Ones     (0-3 yrs)

Multi age groups allow for younger children to learn from older children (scaffolding). The older ones love stepping into this modelling role all the while developing kind heartedness and sensitivity towards the younger ones.

Mostly one instrument at a time is used. This allows children to develop ability to wait for their turn, listen and support their friends, and hear multiple repetitions as they learn from observing others.

Children love familiarity, repetition and a predictable routine. With this in mind the structure of each lesson follows the same predictable structure so children can develop a sense of security and belonging in their learning environment. Although the structure in the same, different pieces are used each week within the structure. These pieces will be found on their listening CD to be purchased upon enrolment.

The learning environment is calm with an emphasis on listening to the high quality music and instruments. Respecting the different stages of early childhood development and learning, there is never pressure for children to perform, observation is a highly valuable way to learn.

Skills developed include: Listening, pitch, rhythm, beat, language and literacy, mathematical skills (counting), size and direction, finger independence, treating instruments with respect and confidence performing for the group.

Social Skills include:  Sitting in a circle, waiting for turns, sharing, accepting help from the teacher, respecting and being kind to others.

Preschoolers (3-5yrs)

Building upon the strong foundation developed in the Little Ones program, we now zone in and nurture ability that will enable an easier transition to learning an instrument.

We zone in on: Accepting guidance and help from the teacher, listening to instructions, caring for our instruments and confidence performing solos and ensembles for the group. Acquisition of these abilities will benefit your child beyond an instrument, such as in public speaking, or voicing their opinion to others.

Musical Skills developed include:  Deeper listening to the quality of sound, identifying different orchestral instruments both by appearance and sound, introduction to Sol-fege, music notation, rhythm and dynamics terminology, and most importantly rest, get ready and play positions.

Children acquire a large repertoire as we build upon the songs learned in Little Ones and introduce the beautiful music from 'Four Little Engines', Suzuki Book 1 repertoire and high quality classical music.

Children are introduced to different instruments through sound, live performance and exploring, touching, playing the real thing, desire is developed. Children develop a preference towards one or more instruments over the program. Such visiting instruments can include: flute, cello, violin, viola, piano, recorder, guitar, double bass and more. Parents will receive support in choosing an instrument with their child mind as well as finding the right teacher for there instrumental journey.
